  10. CUPERTINO, California--May 18, 1992--In line with its goal to bring
  11. products to market faster, Apple Computer, Inc. today introduced the
  12. new Apple Macintosh Quadra 950, a new high-end member of the
  13. Macintosh Quadra personal computer line unveiled just seven months
  14. ago at fall Comdex.
  15.    Apple believes the Macintosh Quadra 950, built around the 33MHz
  16. Motorola 68040 microprocessor, integrates more standard features than
  17. any other personal computer available in the PC industry.
  18.    "With the introduction of the Macintosh Quadra line last fall, we
  19. took a significant step towards fulfilling the needs of customers
  20. with complex computing requirements," said Fred Forsyth, senior vice
  21. president and general manager of the Macintosh Hardware Division.
  22. "The new Macintosh Quadra 950 offers even higher performance and
  23. functionality, yet retains all the ease-of-use features Macintosh
  24. customers have come to expect.
  25.     "The Macintosh Quadra 950 is an excellent choice for publishers and
  26. media integration professionals who need one computer that can
  27. rapidly handle everything from large document management and word
  28. processing to complex graphics, video, animation and sound," Forsyth
  29. added.  "It also performs very well in architectural and engineering
  30. settings where high-speed 3D modeling, rendering and graphics
  31. simulation tasks are often needed."
  32.     The floor-standing Macintosh Quadra 950 provides built-in features
  33. such as on-board 24-bit color, high-speed Ethernet networking, sound
  34. input and output, microprocessor-based caching and floating point
  35. processing. In benchmark tests using productivity applications
  36. developed for both Windows and Macintosh, Ingram Laboratory found
  37. that the Macintosh Quadra 950 was faster than 33MHz and 50MHz 486-
  38. based machines.
  39.     The Macintosh Quadra 950 is equipped with a high performance,
  40. flexible graphics subsystem that provides on-board support of up to
  41. 16 bits per pixel (32,768 colors) images on all Apple displays,
  42. including the Apple 21-inch Color Display. It is also capable of
  43. delivering 24 bits per pixel or true-color (16.7 million colors)
  44. images on Apple displays of up to 16-inches without adding an extra
  45. display card.
  46.     The Macintosh Quadra 950, along with the rest of the Macintosh Quadra
  47. line, features built-in, high-performance connections to Ethernet and
  48. LocalTalk.  Both connections offer the plug-and-play simplicity for
  49. which Apple is known.  For Ethernet connections, the Macintosh Quadra
  50. line is equipped with an Apple Ethernet port and a media independent
  51. connecting system that allows customers to use any standard Ethernet
  52. media including thin coax, thick coax and twisted-pair wiring.
  53.     The Macintosh Quadra 950 offers a high performance input/output (I/O)
  54. bus clock running at 25MHz. Higher I/O performance increases Ethernet
  55. and LocalTalk throughput, permitting faster file access.
  56.     Macintosh Quadra 900 owners can upgrade to the Macintosh Quadra 950
  57. by having a new logic board installed by an Apple authorized
  58. reseller. In the United States, Apple will offer special pricing to
  59. users upgrading from the Macintosh Quadra 900 to the Macintosh Quadra
  60. 950. Apple expects the upgrade kits to be available in the U.S. in
  61. early July.

  65. -- RAM Expansion: 8MB of RAM expandable to 64MB using 4MB SIMMs;
  66.  
  67. -- Graphics Subsystem: High performance graphics support for all
  68. Apple displays--true-color capability for 12-, 13- and 16-inch
  69. displays, 16-bit color capability for all Apple displays, including
  70. the Apple 21-inch Color Display, support for some third-party 19-inch
  71. displays, additional support for VGA, Super VGA, PAL and NTSC modes;
  72.  
  73. -- NuBus Expansion:  5 slots;
  74.  
  75. -- Sound: Sound input (microphone included) and stereo sound output;
  76.  
  77. -- SuperDrive: 1.4MB floppy with the ability to read and write other
  78. formats

  80. such as Windows/DOS, OS/2 and ProDOS;

  82. -- High-Capacity Hard Disk Drive: New high performance 230 MB hard
  83. disk drive configuration;

  85. -- System 7.0.1: Hardware-only system software release that supports
  86. the Macintosh Quadra line, PowerBook line, and Classic II;

  88. -- A/UX: Support for A/UX 3.0, which offers POSIX-compliant access to
  89. Macintosh, UNIX, X Window, OSF/Motif (from Integrated Computer
  90. Solutions) and MS-DOS (using SoftPC from Insignia Solutions)
  91. applications;

  93. -- Storage Capacity:  Up to four 5.25" half-height SCSI devices, two
  94. of which can have front panel access for removable media--CD ROM,
  95. magneto-optical, cartridge drives, etc.;
  96.  
  97. -- Large Power Budget: A 300-watt power supply which provides
  98. increased power for the five NuBus slots and four internal SCSI
  99. devices;
  100.  
  101. -- Key Lock: Three modes of operation--on, off and lock.  Lock mode
  102. disables the floppy disk drive, mouse and keyboard operations.

  104.     In addition to introducing the Macintosh Quadra 950, Apple also
  105. reduced the U.S. manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of its
  106. Macintosh Quadra 700 computers by up to 8.8%.  The new MSRP is
  107. effective today in the U.S.

  110. Pricing and Availability
  111.     The Apple Macintosh Quadra 950 will be available through authorized
  112. Apple resellers worldwide.  Both the Macintosh Quadra 950 and the 700
  113. come equipped with Macintosh System 7.0.1 software, HyperCard 2.1
  114. software, microphone, complete documentation, training software and a
  115. one-year limited warranty. MSRP, configurations, and availability in
  116. the U.S. are as follows:
